EIGHT KILLED AND HUNDREDS INJURED IN CROWD CRUSH AT TRAVIS SCOTT’S ASTROWORLD 2021 FESTIVAL

Scott has issued a statement as attendees share accounts of the event

Eight people have been killed and hundreds injured at Travis Scott’s Astroworld 2021 Festival.

Described by officials as a "mass casualty incident," the tragedy occurred as a result of a crowd crush at the 50,000-capacity event in Houston, Texas on Friday, 5th November. Of the 300 people injured, 11 people were hospitalized due to cardiac arrest, and eight died.

Speaking about the incident — which occurred around 9:40 pm local time — Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña said: “The crowd began to compress towards the front of the stage, and that caused some panic, and it started causing some injuries. People began to fall out, become unconscious, and it created additional panic."

In a statement, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner revealed that a 14-year-old was among the eight people killed at the event. He also revealed that the music was not halted until 10:10 pm — 30 minutes after the crush reportedly began. “This is a very, very active investigation and we will probably be at it for quite some time to determine what happened,” he added.

Travis Scott issued a statement about the incident on Saturday, 6th November. “I’m absolutely devastated by what took place last night," he wrote. "My prayers go out to the families and all those impacted by what happened at Astroworld Festival. Houston PD has my total support as they continue to look into the tragic loss of life.

"I am committed to working together with the Houston community to heal and support the families in need. Thank you to Houston PD, Fire Department and NRG Park for their immediate response and support. Love You All.”

According to the Houston Chronicle, Scott reportedly stopped the performance several times during his headline set after "spotting fans in distress", and asked for security to step in.

According to Billboard, three lawsuits — one naming Drake as a co-defendant — have been filed against the rapper relating to the crowd crush. “This kind of behavior has long been encouraged by the festival’s founder and main performer,” said one plaintiff, festival-goer Manuel Souza. “His express encouragement of violence has previously resulted in serious violence at numerous past concerts.”

DAVID GUETTA WINS DJ MAG TOP 100 DJS 2021

The results for the Top 100 DJs 2021 poll have been announced

david-guetta-top-100-djs-winner-2021

David Guetta has won the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs poll 2021. Guetta has retained the No.1 spot that he claimed last year, a decade after he was first crowned the world’s No.1 DJ back in 2011.

The Frenchman now joins an elite grouping of Dutch DJs — Martin Garrix, Tiësto and Armin van Buuren — who have won the Top 100 vote three times or more.

“It’s wonderful, I’m so happy,” David said to DJ Mag about his win. “To do it two times in a row as well — it’s the third time, but two times in a row is pretty crazy. It’s been an incredibly busy year for me, but it’s always nice when you work hard to feel like people can see it.

“I’ve been doing this for so many years, since I was playing funk records as a teenager. It’s amazing to be able to pursue your passion, and I just hope — cos I also started from nothing — that being No.1 after all these years is an inspiration to kids that are bedroom DJs like I was.”

As part of this year’s Top 100 DJs campaign, DJ Mag once again held Virtual Festivals every Saturday and Sunday during the voting period. The streams — which included sets from David Guetta, KSHMR, Timmy Trumpet and Miss K8 — racked up well over 5.7 million views in total.

The Top 100 DJs results were announced live on stage at the Top 100 DJs Awards, presented by AMF, which took place at Amsterdam’s AFAS Live. Guests at the event  — and the millions watching the live stream around the world  — were treated to performances from Afrojack, Alan Walker, Armin van Buuren (Highest Trance DJ), Avalan, Christina Novelli, Don Diablo (Highest Future House DJ), Carnage/GORDO (Highest Returning DJ), Mariana BO, MORTEN (Highest New Entry), Oliver Heldens and W&W.

Also announced during the Top 100 DJs Award show were two editorial choice awards, selected by DJ Mag’s editors to recognise the contribution of artists making a significant impact outside the scope of Top 100 DJs voting. Japanese artist Qrion  — whose rise since debuting on Anjunadeep in 2019 has been meteoric  — was presented with the Future Star award. Detroit techno architect Kevin Saunderson  — fresh from rebooting his E-Dancer project with a remix album on Drumcode and appearing on the cover of DJ Mag North America  — was given the Lifetime Achievement award.

The COVID-19 pandemic has adversely affected a lot of elements of the international electronic dance music scene, but it doesn’t seem to have dented the enthusiasm of dance music fans — an incredible 1.3 million people voted in the Top 100 DJs poll this year, matching last year’s total, cementing Top 100 DJs position as the biggest music poll in the world.

Most voters in this year’s Top 100 DJs came from prime clubbing age ranges, with 40% of votes coming from 18-24-year-olds and 40% from the 25-34 age range. However, with clubs and festivals still closed or cancelled for most of the year, a lot of participants in the poll clearly based their votes on live-streamed sets or past favourites.

Top 101 Producers 2021 Winner: Vintage Culture
This year’s rankings feature first time Brazilian winner Vintage Culture, who has been on a tear of huge releases and remixes. Previous winner David Guetta takes home second place with the continuous expansion of his Future Rave sound. Groove master Kryder comes in next at #3, his highest finish yet. 4th place belongs to Armin van Buuren, who has finished in the Top 20 every year since the creation of the rankings. And rounding out the Top 5 is rising talent John Summit, who has been on an absolute bender of releases this year.
Top 101 Producers 2021: Full Ranking
The rankings are calculated by summing up each artist’s unique DJ support between October 1, 2020 and September 30, 2021. This year the algorithm to calculate the final positions has seen some slight adjustments, allowing one artist to support another artist a maximum of 5 times to count towards the rankings. For example, if David Guetta supported Oliver Heldens on 10 different tracks, this would count as 5 points for the rankings.

Swedish House Mafia partner with IKEA for collection focused on at-home creativity for artists

Swedish House Mafia partner with IKEA for collection focused on at-home creativity for artistsScreen Shot 2021 07 18 At 8.00.28 PM

There’s a new Swedish House Mafia collaboration, but it’s not the one anyone could have predicted. After the Swedes closed out their pre-show stint at the VMAs with a jaw-dropping single teaser alongside The Weeknd—currently fan-dubbed “Moth To A Flame”—they’re now joining forces with a fellow Swedish-based giant, IKEA.

Through a collection scheduled to debut in September 2022, which will include “home furnishing solutions designed to make it easier to get into a creative flow for producing, playing and listening to music at home,” Swedish House Mafia and IKEA will dive into the relationship between music and inspiring at-home creativity. For those that have been following along with the trio during the last year-plus, the announcement doesn’t entirely come as a surprise considering AxwellSebastian Ingrosso, and Steve Angello were spotted at an IKEA prototype factory in Sweden in February 2022. IKEA’s product design leader James Futcher and the Sewdes themselves spoke on why the furniture brand and one of dance music’s most hailed names decided to partner up, stating,

“We are very excited and happy to announce the collaboration with Swedish House Mafia. With their solid expertise in music production, we hope to be able together to democratize creativity and music production so that even more people can be more creative at home. We want to explore how IKEA together with Swedish House Mafia could make the everyday life easier for the many people listening to and creating music. This collection will enable people to create the perfect home studio for an affordable price.” – James Futcher

“We both wanted to reach out of our comfort zones and create something new and fresh together: a pure collaboration between music creators and a home expert. We strongly felt a need to collaborate with someone who shared our vision of making it possible for everyone to create music at home. As artists and producers, we also understand the importance of a home studio set-up and the needs and challenges many up-and-coming artists and creatives have at home.” – Swedish House Mafia

ADE moves ahead with Festival, ADE conference cancelled

The past months have been increasingly turbulent in the Netherlands with continuous uncertainties and changing regulations, leading to nationwide demonstrations by the festival and nightlife scene over the past weeks.

During its most recent press conference, the Dutch government has announced its new set of Covid regulations, including the mandate that clubs, venues and indoor events are forced to close between 00:00 and 06:00. Despite these restrictions, we are fully committed to host a solid and safe ADE Festival in accordance with the current policies.

We are touched by the positive energy and the resilience displayed by our beloved nightlife scene, willing to do everything possible including shifting their schedules to daytime in order to push forward with their events within the current measures. We want to do all we can to support our scene in its efforts to open up again.

The recent protest marches have shown once again the immense passion and devotion among the electronic music scene and we are filled with joy that we will still be able to dance and celebrate with all of you this year.

Over the coming days, the ADE team and the Amsterdam city council are examining the last details of the new regulations for each type of event within the total ADE offering.

Please read our FAQ below for more information regarding the implications of the current policy on your access to venues and events, and be sure check in with local requirements before attending events next month.

ADE Conference

Due to months of regulatory uncertainties up until four weeks before the event, paired with strict conditions surrounding international travel, the ADE Pro conference has been forced to cancel. Instead, we are pouring all of our resources available into making ADE Festival as safe and unforgettable as possible.

ADE Pro Pass buyers will be contacted with more info about their ticket within days. Please note that all ticket buyers will have the opportunity to reimburse their Pro Pass or move it to 2022.

For professionals in the city during the festival looking for a place to network, we are exploring a number of networking opportunities to be announced soon. Keep an eye on our channels over the following weeks to find out more.
