PIONEER DJ LAUNCH TWO NEW SERATO CONTROLLERS

The DDJ-REV-1 and the DDJ-REV-7 are totally new designs from Pioneer DJ

Pioneer DJ has launched two new Serato controllers with a totally new design – the DDJ-REV-1 and the DDJ-REV-7. Aimed at opposite ends of the experience spectrum, both controllers are designed with battle-style DJs in mind, mimicking the layout of two turntables and a mixer.

First off, the REV-1 is the entry-level controller in the range, aimed at users of Serato DJ Lite, which the layout mimics. Keen eye’d DJs might notice the mixer section also mimics that of the DJM-S series, which is Pioneer DJ’s flagship battle mixer range. There’s Paddle FX levers for adding quick performance FX, eight performance pads with a range of modes including Hot Cues, Sampler and Scratch Bank to auto-load some classic scratch techniques. There’s also a three-band EQ and dual-pass filter per channel.

The deck section is where Pioneer DJ has switched tac, moving the tempo slider to the top of the controller rather than on the side. This is similar to how scratch and battle DJs layout their turntables. Pioneer DJ has also made the jogs the same size as those on the higher-end DDJ-SB3, for more accurate scratching.

A new feature called Track Scratching has also been added, which automatically jumps back to the previous cue point when you move the platter backwards or when you lift your hand, to make it easier to scratch. It means you won’t have to quickly try and find the exact point to start your scratch from. Pioneer DJ has also combined the mic and master output from the mixer so that the mic feed runs to your stream rather than only to the master output as it does on some other controllers.

REV-7 is aimed at pro users, with a full suite of pro features you’d expect for the seasoned Serato DJ Pro user. Also a two-channel unit, the REV-7 features motorised jog wheels, as well as a near-identical centre section to the DJM-S series mixers. Like the REV-1, Pioneer DJ has moved the tempo slider to the top of the jog wheel, to mimic the setup of a battle DJ. The jogs are full 7-inch and feature the now common-place on-jog display.

It features a similar mixer layout to the REV-1, with long-throw volume faders, crossfader, three-band EQ and dual-band filter per channel, with eight RGB performance pads, with the same modes: Hot Cue, Roll, Sampler, Scratch Bank and more.

The main difference between the REV-7 and the REV-1 is that many of the features such as sample triggering and FX are all built into the unit and can be used without a computer. The 7 has 22 FX that can be applied to any input signal, regardless of whether you’re using Serato or not. It also includes the Color FX section with a further five FX. And because of that, the REV-7 has a lot more I/O options including phono amp inputs, two mic ins, two aux ins, quarter-inch jack booth outs, unbalanced RCA master out and balanced XLR outs. As mentioned, the jogs are motorised, and the on-jog display shows the waveform and track info of the music or sample loaded on each deck. Anyone who buys the REV-7 will also get three months of TIDAL Hi-Fi for free.

The REV-1 will cost £259 while the REV-7 will cost £1,829. Both are available now. Watch the video below for more info and visit the Pioneer DJ site for the full spec.

A-TRAK AND RANE ANNOUNCE NEW BATTLE MIXER COLLAB

I’m a big believer that every classic piece of kit should have a signature feature, something that sets it apart from the rest.

A-Trak

SEVENTY A-TRAK SIGNATURE EDITION

The SEVENTY A-TRAK SIGNATURE EDITION is a meticulously designed remix of the popular RANE SEVENTY DJ mixer. Internationally renowned DJ, turntablist, and producer, A-Trak, played an integral part in the mixer’s creation, handpicking the features, signature sound, and look of what he considers to be the ultimate mixer for the future of turntablist performance.

SEVENTY A-TRAK SIGNATURE EDITION || MORE THAN JUST A PRETTY FACEPLATE

The exterior of the SEVENTY A-TRAK SIGNATURE EDITION features a stunning silver finish that gleams beneath the aluminum-capped rotary-styled knobs and encoders. Custom font-faces and elements adorn the mixer, but the real magic lies beneath the surface. The sound curve and frequency response of the mixer was handcrafted by A-Trak himself, increasing the depth of the low-end to ensure that the high-quality audio matches his signature sound. Simply put, the SEVENTY A-TRAK SIGNATURE EDITION sounds like nothing you’ve ever experienced before!

SEVENTY A-TRAK SIGNATURE EDITION || PERFORMANCE-ENHANCING FADER FX

“I’m a big believer that every classic piece of kit should have a signature feature,” says A-Trak, “something that sets it apart from the rest.” Enter Fader FX, a new mixer feature that transforms the channel volume faders into linear controllers for performance effects like Filter, Roll, Pitch, Ring-Modulator, and four types of Oscillators. DJs can dive deep into the settings of these Fader FX options to change root keys, octaves, and more, crafting a personalized set of tools to take with them to their next performance or battle.

SEVENTY A-TRAK SIGNATURE EDITION || BUILT ON THE SEVENTY’S SOLID FOUNDATION

The SEVENTY A-TRAK SIGNATURE EDITION was built upon the solid foundation of the RANE SEVENTY, known for its intuitive layout and best-in-class performance. The same solid-steel construction that makes the SEVENTY a battle-standard mixer is found in the SEVENTY A-TRAK SIGNATURE EDITION along with the same premium MAG FOUR faders and MPC-style Performance Pads. All of the other features that make the original SEVENTY the mixer of choice for discerning DJs are in the SEVENTY A-TRAK SIGNATURE EDITION as well, including easy access to Serato’s Scratch Bank, external crossfader tension adjustment, and six post-fader internal Flex FX (including Fader FX) which can layered with Serato DJ Pro’s Software FX.

NEW VIRTUALDJ ADDS CDJ EXPORT, INCLUDING PLAYLISTS AND STEMS

Users can export straight to USB stick without rekordbox

virtual dj summer 2021

VirtualDJ has announced a new Summer 2021 version, that includes the ability to export both Playlists and individual stems from any song straight to USB to work with any CDJ or XDJ hardware. Last year, VirtualDJ introduced an AI stem separation feature that let users ‘mix’ individual parts of any song, such as isolating the acapella from a mixed stereo file.

The Summer 2021 version introduces the ability to add FX to individual stems, such as reverb to just the vocal within a mixed track. You can also scratch only the vocal while the rest of the track continues to play.

The new version also lets users export straight to USB stick that is then useable with any CDJ model and will include all of your analysis and cue points. Users can choose to export only individual stems from certain tracks such as just the drums from one and just the bassline from another. These stems can then be played back directly on the CDJ or XDJ.

Summer 2021 also introduces a new hashtags feature that lets users group tracks based on tags like #groovy, #deep etc. Find out more about VirtualDJ Summer 2021 here. Watch our video below to learn more about how stem separation works.

TECHNICS ANNOUNCE ENTRY LEVEL TURNTABLE

The new turntable will set you back £799

Technics have announced a new turntable.

After unveiling the new 1200MK7 direct drive turntable last week, Technics have shared details of a brand new "entry level" turntable which will be available later this year.

Titled the SL-100C, the turntable has been marketed as the lower-priced version of Technic's SL-1500C, and unlike the SL-1500C, will not feature an in-built phono stage or pitch fader.

“The huge success of the SL-1500C, offering a fully featured package for the dedicated hi-fi enthusiast, with all the core Technics turntable technologies, has shown we have hit the mark within a popular and competitive turntable class,” says European Technics product manager Frank Balzuweit.

“The demand for this high-quality ‘plug’n’play’ turntable – having exceeded our own expectations – is still undiminished even to this day. However, there is still a strong appetite from the market to deliver a similarly attractive package at an even more affordable price.”

The Technics SL-100C will be available from June for £799. You can read more about it here.

When the SL-1210MK7 was announced back in 2019, DJ Mag made a documentary about the new Technics range and why it’s still relevant for modern DJs. You can watch the video below.

PIONEER DJ LAUNCH NEW STUDIO AND DJ MONITORS

Pioneer DJ VM speakers

The VM range comes in five-, seven- and eight-inch cones

DECLAN MCGLYNN

TUESDAY, MARCH 30, 2021 - 14:33

Facebook Twitter

Pioneer DJ has launched a new series of near-field DJ and studio monitors, the VM range. The VM comes in three sizes: five-inch cone, seven-inch cone and eight-inch cone and all three sizes come with DSP technology to ‘tune’ the speaker to the space that they’re placed in. They’re designed to be used for both DJ monitoring at home when either practicing, preparing your set and live streaming – where the speakers can be tuned to have more of a ‘hyped’ sound – and for use in the studio where you can switch the frequency response back to flat. There are 16 total settings across both speakers, with four options on each, changed using the indented rotary on the back of each speaker.

The speakers use Aramid fibre cones and what Pioneer DJ is calling a ‘Vortex Bass Accelerator’ which is essentially a bass port round back with ridges to evenly distribute any bass vibrations. That means that when placed very near a wall, you’ll probably want to use the DSP to reduce the bass slightly.

The speakers feature a new design compared to their predecessors with a ‘Constant Directivity Horn’ that allows for a wider sound stage and more even distribution of high and mid frequencies. The five-inch speakers roll down to 40Hz, while the sevens to 37Hz and the eights to 34Hz.

Price points are encouraging for new and intermediate producers and DJs with the fives coming in at £318 per pair, £438 for the sevens and £538 for a pair of eights.

Find out more about the VM range here.

Crystal-clear sound quality

The DJM-S11 inherits the raw and high-density sound from the DJM-900NXS2 thanks to studio-quality 64-bit mixing and dithering processing inside the DSP, and a low-jitter clock circuit and 32bit high-quality D/A converter in the master output section.
