NEW YORK LAUNCHES VACCINE PASSPORT APP TO ‘FAST-TRACK’ REOPENING OF VENUES
The free and voluntary “Excelsior Pass” is available now
A digital vaccine passport app has been made available to New Yorkers in a bid to speed-up the reopening process for business and venues in the state.
The “Excelsior Pass” is a free, voluntary app that uses secure technology to confirm if a person has been fully vaccinated against coronavirus, or has recently tested negative for the virus. The app will then generate a QR code for the user, which participating venues and businesses will be able to scan upon arrival.
The app’s launch is intended to help “fast-track the reopening of businesses and event venues in accordance with New York State Department of Health guidelines,” New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said in an official statement.
“New Yorkers have proven they can follow public health guidance to beat back COVID, and the innovative Excelsior Pass is another tool in our new toolbox to fight the virus while allowing more sectors of the economy to reopen safely and keeping personal information secure,” he added.
The launch of the “Excelsior Pass” marks New York as the first North American state to implement a vaccine passport-style system, and follows an announcement from earlier this month which stated that entertainment and music venues will be able to open at 33% capacity from April.
As part of the app’s initial launch, the “Excelsior Pass” is being used by numerous New York theatres, stadiums, arenas and wedding venues. Madison Square Garden and Times Union Center are among the first venues to

As more New Yorkers get vaccinated each day and as key public health metrics continue to regularly reach their lowest rates in months, the first-in-the-nation Excelsior Pass heralds the next step in our thoughtful, science-based reopening.”
The “Excelsior Pass” is available on iPhone and Android phones, and a “special emphasis” has been placed on data privacy for users. The app uses technologies like blockchain and encryption to protect data, and no health data is stored or tracked within the app.

In the UK, the prospect of introducing vaccine passports has proved divisive. Earlier this week, after it was revealed the the government has been considering vaccine passports for reopening the hospitality and nightlife sectors, which currently remain closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NTIA issued a statement warning that the scheme was “unworkable”, and could cause "further anxiety" for venue operators. NTIA CEO Michael Kill described the prospect as a "clear subject of cross sector discrimination”.
Earlier this month, it was announced that a vaccine passport for tourists to enter Spain — including Ibiza and the rest of the Balearic Islands — will be ready to be implemented by June.

Spotify is launching its own version of the live audio social network Clubhouse. The invite-only iOS app has exploded over the past few months and lets users host their own ‘rooms’, with guest moderators to discuss a wide range of topics, allowing listeners to ask questions like a live group phone call. Recent guests have included Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerburg and Spotify founder Daniel Ek. According to the Verge, Spotify has acquired a company called Betty Labs who make an app called Locker Room, which is similar to Clubhouse but for sports events.
Locker Room will remain as part of the iOS store as its own app for now, and any user can host rooms and discussions and Locker Room users aren’t required to use Spotify exclusively.
It comes off the back of Twitter launching their own Spaces audio alternative to Clubhouse, while Instagram has added the ability to go live with four total accounts, rather than two. It’s not a huge surprise given Spotify’s pivot to podcasting over the past few years, with the Swedish company’s Chief R&D Officer Gustav Söderström telling The Verge people are already recording their Clubhouse and Spaces chats to their podcasting app Anchor to host them on Spotify. Facebook is also reportedly looking into a live audio feature.

Pioneer DJ has launched a new series of near-field DJ and studio monitors, the VM range. The VM comes in three sizes: five-inch cone, seven-inch cone and eight-inch cone and all three sizes come with DSP technology to ‘tune’ the speaker to the space that they’re placed in. They’re designed to be used for both DJ monitoring at home when either practicing, preparing your set and live streaming – where the speakers can be tuned to have more of a ‘hyped’ sound – and for use in the studio where you can switch the frequency response back to flat. There are 16 total settings across both speakers, with four options on each, changed using the indented rotary on the back of each speaker.
The speakers use Aramid fibre cones and what Pioneer DJ is calling a ‘Vortex Bass Accelerator’ which is essentially a bass port round back with ridges to evenly distribute any bass vibrations. That means that when placed very near a wall, you’ll probably want to use the DSP to reduce the bass slightly.
The speakers feature a new design compared to their predecessors with a ‘Constant Directivity Horn’ that allows for a wider sound stage and more even distribution of high and mid frequencies. The five-inch speakers roll down to 40Hz, while the sevens to 37Hz and the eights to 34Hz.
Price points are encouraging for new and intermediate producers and DJs with the fives coming in at £318 per pair, £438 for the sevens and £538 for a pair of eights.

MALCOLM CECIL, CREATOR OF THE WORLD'S LARGEST SYNTH, DIES AGED 84
The Stevie Wonder collaborator passed away after a long illness
Synthesizer legend, Stevie Wonder collaborator and inventor of TONTO – the world’s biggest synthesizer – Malcolm Cecil has died aged 84. Cecil was one-half of TONTO’s Expanding Head Band, which used Cecil and band member Robert Margouleff’s giant modular synth as its key instrument across two albums. His death was announced on the Bob Moog Foundation's Twitter on Sunday, March 28th.
They caught the attention of a young Stevie Wonder who enlisted them to work on his groundbreaking albums Music Of My Mind, Talking Book, Innervisions and Fulfillingness’ First Finale. Cecil also worked alongside Gil Scott-Heron, The Isley Brothers, Quincy Jones and Bobby Womac and is considered a synth pioneer.
TONTO was eventually incorporated into the National Music Centre in Alberta, Canada, where it’s still used to this day. Watch a video of it in action below.
TOMORROWLAND ANNOUNCES WINTER FESTIVAL FOR 2022
The week-long event will take place in March 2020 at the French ski resort of Alpe d’Huez
Tomorrowland has announced details of its second winter festival, scheduled to take place in March 2022.
After being forced to cancel its 2020 and 2021 editions to the coronavirus pandemic, Tomorrowland is now setting its site on the week of 19th - 26th March 2022 for its return to the French ski resort of Alpe d’Huez.
The news comes after the announcement yesterday (23rd March) that Tomorrowland would be hosting a live stream this week in place of its cancelled 2021 winter edition. Taking place this Thursday, 25th March, the live stream will come live from Alpe d’Huez and will feature an all-French line-up: Martin Solveig and Kungs will go B2B for the first time ever, while Klingande and Ofenbach also lined up for exclusive performances. The performances will be streamed from an altitude of more than 2,000 meters, with views of the Alpe d'Huez and surrounding mountains.
While little further information is available about next year’s edition of Tomorrowland winter, pre-registration for tickets is now open here.
The line-up for Tomorrowland Winter 2019 included names such as Armin van Buuren, Afrojack, Martin Garrix, Steve Aoki and Nervo.
Earlier this month, the Belgian festival announced that it would be officially moving the dates of its flagship festival for 2021 from July to late in the summer, across two weekends in August and September.

Legendary electronic music duo Justice have sent Justin Bieber a cease-and-desist letter for what they claim is an infringement on their trademarked logo and branding.
The letter stems from the cover of Bieber's new album Justice, which is scheduled to release tomorrow, March 19th. Fans of Justice and their record label, Ed Banger Records, pointed out similarities between the "t" in Justice's logo and the "t" in the typeface of Bieber's Justice cover. Many fans believed that the pop star and the iconic French production tandem were collaborating on new music, according to Justice’s co-manager Tyler Goldberg.
“The morning Bieber announced his album, it was pretty tough to miss,” Goldberg told Rolling Stone. “Aside from seeing it all over the internet ourselves, we heard from hundreds of people throughout the day — industry people, Justice fans — and the Justice guys received a ton of messages, not only compelled to point out the similarities between the Justice Justin Bieber album, but confused. ‘Is this a Justice collaboration?'”
In late February 2020, Ed Banger poked fun at Bieber for his album cover, writing in an Instagram post that the label was appointing him as its "Art Director." "Ed Banger records appoints Mr Justin Drew Bieber as Art Director," the post reads. "We would like to thank Mr So Me for all his work since 2003."
However, after Bieber's team failed to amend the graphic and decided to move forward with the album's promotion, which included the release of merchandise, the situation has become litigious.
According to Rolling Stone, a March 10th letter from Justice’s legal team to Bieber’s lawyer and management called for Bieber to halt his use of "Justice" jointly with the cross from Justice's logo, a "Mark" that the duo trademarked in France and the European Union.
“Your use of the Mark is illegal," the cease-and-desist letter reads. "You have not received permission from Justice to utilize the Mark. Moreover, Bieber’s work is in no way affiliated with, supported by, or sponsored by Justice. Such use of the Mark is not only illegal, but likely to deceive and confuse consumers."
According to the letter, Bieber’s team had contacted Justice’s management via email to inquire about the graphic designer who developed their logo. However, after the designer expressed interest in working with Bieber in a subsequent email, Justice’s management alleges that Bieber’s team failed to communicate further.
“Basically, the trail went cold. There was attempts to set up the introduction, and it never happened,” Justice co-manager John Scholz told Rolling Stone. “Given that we have received emails from them where a member of [Bieber’s] management team specifically attached the Justice logo and asked to connect with the Justice logo designer; they mentioned it was to work on a Justin Bieber project, they did not give us any details about it, no mention of an album called ‘Justice’ or a logo using the word ‘Justice.'”
At the time of this article's publication, Bieber nor a member of his team have responded publicly. Justice’s management, however, has claimed that the singer's attorneys did "reject" the cease-and-desist letter on the grounds that his usage did not infringe on the duo’s trademark.

ALOE BLACC SAYS ADDITIONAL COLLABORATIONS WITH AVICII ARE PENDING APPROVAL
In an interview with the Daily Star, Aloe Blacc referenced that he still has several unreleased collaborations and ideas that he started working on with Avicii—projects he hopes will eventually see the light of day.
The powerhouse singer-songwriter behind two of Avicii's biggest hits, "SOS" and "Wake Me Up," has been vocal in years past about having several works with Avicii in progress. He indicated that he's been in contact with Avicii's team about the unreleased tracks in question, but they are ultimately still pending approval for official release.
"I have a few tracks but I am not certain if his record label or family will release them," Blacc told The Star's "Wired" column. "It's really up to them but some songs are finished and some are not."
Blacc suggested that without Avicii present to give his final blessing, the release process is inherently more difficult. The two co-wrote "Wake Me Up" together, which was released in 2013 and has since amassed over 1 billion streams on Spotify alone. While "SOS" was released on Avicii's posthumous album, Tim, the producer's notes left a clear indication that he had reserved the production for Aloe Blacc.
To that end, Blacc isn't pushing it, and says the final decision as to whether or not any additional collaborations are released is out of his control at the moment. "I am just leaving it in the hands of the people that can make those decisions," he said.
